If you’re craving a small-town getaway full of charm and nature, I can’t wait to tell you about Van Buren, Arkansas. Nestled on the Arkansas River near the Oklahoma border, Van Buren swept me off my feet the first time I walked its historic Main Street. I love how it blends rich frontier history with Ozark foothill scenery—this place makes you feel welcome the minute you arrive. Whether you're riding vintage trains, browsing antiques, or hiking in the hills, you'll find the kind of nostalgia and simplicity that I treasure in a getaway.

Van Buren, AR Highlights:

  • Visiting with Family? I always start with the Van Buren Historic Main Street. You’ll love wandering 19th-century storefronts packed with boutiques and antiques. I’ve found the best little cafés tucked between shops here—it’s a slow-paced stroll that never gets old.
  • Love the Outdoors? Head to Lee Creek Park. I’ve hiked these trails on early fall mornings and they’re gorgeous. You’ll find peaceful riverside paths, a few quiet fishing spots, and plenty of places to just take in the views.
  • Traveling with Kids? Don’t miss the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad. I rode through the Boston Mountains in a vintage railcar and felt like a kid again. It’s scenic, unique, and such a fun way to see the countryside.
  • Feeling Adventurous? Take a side trip to Devil’s Den State Park. I’ve hiked its rugged trails and explored the caves—it’s one of the Ozarks' most beautiful spots, and only a short drive from town.
  • Love Treasure Hunting? You’ll want to spend some serious time in the Main Street antique stores. I’ve uncovered everything from vintage signs to handmade crafts. Even if you’re just browsing, it’s a fun way to soak up the town’s character.

Best Time to Visit Van Buren, AR

From all my visits, I always recommend coming in the spring or fall—April through May or September to November. That’s when the weather’s perfect for walking tours, festivals, and hiking. I’ve visited in the summer too, and while it gets warm, the river and nearby parks help you cool off. If you prefer quiet escapes, winter’s calm and peaceful charm is hard to beat.

  • Driving in? I usually come in via I-40—Van Buren is just 10 minutes from Fort Smith, 2 hours from Little Rock, or about an hour from Fayetteville. It’s easy to reach, which I love.
  • By Train? You’ll want to hop aboard the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad. The journey starts right in Van Buren, and I promise it’s worth carving out a day just for the ride.
  • Flying in? You can land at Fort Smith Regional Airport (FSM). I’ve flown in before and the 15-minute drive to Van Buren couldn’t be easier.
