Established in 1940, the Mazatzal Wilderness area encompasses more than 252,000 acres of the Coconino National Forest and the Tonto National Forest. The name of the wilderness area is pronounced as "Mah-zaht-zahl,” which means “land of the deer,” and comes from one of Mexico’s old Indian cultures. Within the Mazatzal Wilderness are around forty scenic trails for hiking across both of the national forests. Along these trails, hikers may spot a variety of wildlife and find abundant opportunities for great photography. The wilderness area’s easter side primarily consists of pine or brush-covered mountains with the occasional vertical-walled, narrow canyon.
