Carmel-by-the-Sea, California is one of the most beautiful destinations on the Monterey Peninsula , officially incorporated in 1916 as an exclusive resort artist colony, attracting luminaries like Mary Austin and Jack London.

Today, the lovely beachfront town is home to more than 100 art galleries, along with whimsical 1920s-era garden cottages constructed in fairytale style by architect Hugh Comstock.

Museums and libraries abound, including the historic Carmel Mission.

Visitors can explore the great outdoors at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve or birdwatch at Carmel River State Beach, which offers scuba diving entry points. Wine tasting rooms are also prevalent throughout the surrounding Central Coast Wine Country region.
