Sitting on the banks of the Potomac River, Mount Vernon is the former plantation home of George Washington.

The 500-acre property has approximately 30 historic outbuildings in addition to the elegant mansion, and visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and gardens at their leisure.

A guided tour of the mansion is included in the price of admission, and for an additional fee, there's also a family-friendly tour that explains what daily life was like during the 18th century. Kids will also particularly like watching farming demonstrations at the Pioneer Farm, doing crafts in the Hands-on-History Center, and participating in the I Spy Scavenger Hunt.
