Sitting right where the Lima River meets the Atlantic Ocean, Viana do Castelo is one of the best cities to visit on Portugal's Costa Verde. It has a decidedly maritime atmosphere, but it's best known for its spectacular architecture, which ranges from the 16th-century city hall building in the main square to the iconic 20th-century Santa Luzia church that sits on top of a hill behind the city.
