History of Puerto Rico Airport Code SJU
There's a lot of history behind Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). The first ideas for the airport came in the 1940s. It was in 1945 that the island's government realized that a new airport was needed to cope with air traffic in and out of Puerto Rico. The island's main airport at the time was San Juan International Airport in the Isla Grande district of San Juan. This airport still exists and has since been renamed Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport, but was just not big enough to cope with Puerto Rico's expanding population and rising tourism figures.
San Juan International Airport also had runways that were just too small to cope with the larger passenger jets that were coming into popular use at the time, so a new airport was vital for the island to thrive. In 1945, it was decided that the new airport would be built in the Carolina area, just outside Puerto Rico. The architect team of Osvaldo Toro and Miguel Ferrer worked on the designs for the airport; the pair had also been in charge of designing other major structures around the island like the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico.
Construction began in the late 1940s and the airport was officially inaugurated in 1955 as Puerto Rico International Airport. Luis Muñoz Marín, the first elected governor of Puerto Rico, was there for the big day and gave a speech about the important of the airport and its architectural beauty. In the years that followed, SJU airport saw a lot of expansion and development in line with the rest of Puerto Rico. It was eventually renamed after Luis Muñoz Marín himself.
