We all have reasons to travel and the power of flight has made it so much easier to get from region to region, state to state, and country to country. As you travel all around the United States or internationally, take a look at your flight tickets and the various information screens around the airports you visit. You'll notice that every airport is given a three-letter code. These codes, known as IATA airport codes or IATA location identifiers, are used to quickly and easily distinguish one airport from another. They're all completely unique and can be found all around the globe. If you're traveling to or from the city of Phoenix, Arizona, the airport code you need to know is PHX. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has a history going back many decades, all the way to the 1920s. The unique name of this particular airport was chosen by airline boss J. It was actually the fourth airport to be built for the city of Phoenix and only had a single runway when it opened up.

Passenger service began at PHX airport in 1930 and the city of Phoenix bought the airport in 1935, with more routes and facilities added in the years that followed, with one of the most significant developments at PHX airport being the opening of the biggest terminal building, Terminal 4, in 1990. The airport has now reached a point where it covers 3,400 acres of land and has 116 gates at three different terminals. It is the main airport for Phoenix and is the biggest and busiest airport in all of Arizona.
