It was actually constructed on a site that was chosen by none other than Charles Lindbergh himself, the famous aviator and explorer who was the first person to carry out a non-stop solo flight from New York to Paris. As with many other airports and airfields all around the United States, CMH fell under the control of the United States Military during World War II.

It was known as Naval Air Station Columbus during this time, but was handed back to city authorities in 1946.
