Thousands of airports have been constructed all around the world. Both small and large in size and scope, these airports all have the same purpose: to connect people via air travel. Whether you're hopping on a jumbo jet to visit the other side of the world or simply catching a short-haul flight to a neighboring state, air travel is helping bring people together. Each airport has its own name, but names are subject to change over time. So, in order to permanently identify airports in a quick and easy way, they're all also given three letter airport codes. The airport code CMH is used to designate John Glenn Columbus International Airport.

Airport code CMH, John Glenn Columbus International Airport, has a very interesting history dating back nearly a century. The airport first opened its doors in July of 1929. It was actually constructed on a site that was chosen by none other than Charles Lindbergh himself, the famous aviator and explorer who was the first person to carry out a non-stop solo flight from New York to Paris. As with many other airports and airfields all around the United States, CMH fell under the control of the United States Military during World War II.

It was known as Naval Air Station Columbus during this time, but was handed back to city authorities in 1946. In the years that followed, CMH airport started to grow and expand as the city of Columbus also began to develop and attract more visitors and residents. Over the last few decades in particular, many tens of millions of dollars have been invested in John Glenn Columbus International Airport in order to expand the facilities and offer more efficient service and additional flight routes. Originally, the airport covered just 524 acres. Nowadays, the airport is 2,265 acres in size. It was named in honor of astronaut and senator John Glenn.
