Austin–Bergstrom International Airport began life as Bergstrom Air Force Base and is a relatively recent addition to the major airport world in the United States. For many years, Robert Mueller Municipal Airport was the main airport for the city of Austin, being built in 1930 and serving the city until 1999, when Austin-Bergstrom International Airport opened up. It was in the 1970s that city authorities started to lay out plans for a new Austin airport, contacting the United States Air Force with an idea of making joint use of Bergstrom Air Force Base.

The Air Force initially rejected the idea, and the city had to look elsewhere. They eventually chose a site near the city of Manor in Travis County, but protests erupted and this idea was eventually abandoned. At around the same time, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission decided to close down Bergstrom Air Force Base. It was a serendipitous moment for the city authorities, who were able to return to their original plan of constructing an Austin airport at the base.

Many of the pre-existing facilities were kept, with new ones being constructed to make AUS suitable for large-scale passenger traffic. The airport opened up in May of 1999 and was able to take the airport code AUS from Mueller, which closed at the same time. The airport was named after Captain John August Earl Bergstrom, an Air Force officer who was part of the distinguished 19th Bombardment Group.
