Take a step into another time and place at the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures & Education Center in Corpus Christi, where you can glimpse into Asian ancestry and learn all about historical relics from all over the world's largest continent. China, Japan, India, the Philippines, the Hmong, Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan are just a few of the places and peoples you will learn about on your visit.
Some of the things you can expect to discover at the museum are such wonders as ancient Japanese artistry and customs, traditional and contemporary Asian crafts, and a whole host of diverse cultural antiques.
Ever wanted to dress up in traditional Asian clothing? If so, then the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures is the place for you as on display is a fantastic collection of intricately crafted kimonos, and although the ones you’ll be trying on are in fact replicas, you’ll still get an authentic experience and have some great fun in the process. Kimono translates as “something to wear” and is an elegant traditional Japanese garment worn by women at formal occasions.
If you have an interest in Chinese artefacts, then you might want to take a look at the museum's collection of beautifully hand-carved pieces of jade. In Chinese culture, these pieces symbolise not only perfection, as becomes apparent when examining the delicate intricacies of these pieces, but also immortality and nobility.
Mrs Billie Trimble Chandler founded the museum during the 1960s after living and teaching in Japan for 17 years, and her original collection of artefacts still makes up a good part of the museum's exhibits. The museum runs on a non-profit basis and sets out to educate people on the beauty in Asian culture. The architecture of the center was designed by David R. Richter and Elizabeth Chu Richter.
The Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures & Education Center provides great learning resources with frequent visits from touring exhibitions from all over the globe. Over 1,500 children visit the museum each year. All educational programs take place on the second floor and give children, students, and even members of the general public a unique and intimate window into Asia from within the heart of Texas.
