The history of airport code SAT, San Antonio International Airport, goes back all the way to the 1940s. Around 1,200 acres of the land that would eventually be used for the construction of SAT airport was purchased by the City of San Antonio in 1941, with a plan in place to use that land as the site of a new airport that would serve San Antonio and the surrounding area of South-Central Texas.
Construction began on the airport, which was known as San Antonio Municipal Airport at the time, but was interrupted by World War II. The unfinished airport was handed over to the military and known as Alamo Field, being used as a training site. When the war ended, the City of San Antonio regained control of SAT and started expanding the airport with a new terminal in the 1950s and more facilities in the years to follow, as well as renaming the airport to reflect its international status.
