Created in 2001 to lessen the impact of Lake Waco being raised by 7 feet, the Lake Waco Wetlands provides an important habitat for a wide range of plant, animal, and insect species, which visitors can learn about at the on-site research and education center. The wetlands themselves cover an area of 180 acres; one of the highlights is a 6-acre plant nursery that boasts aquatic plants like bulrushes, duck potatoes, and two different types of water lily. Several walking paths and raised walkways wind their way through the wetlands, and there are also observation platforms that are perfect for birdwatching.
