House of Pies was originally opened in 1965 by Al Lapin, Jr., the franchise proprietor behind the International House of Pancakes and Orange Julius chains. The family-operated diner and bakery has been a Houston institution over the past half-century, offering homemade old-fashioned pies made from scratch without preservatives. Speciality pies are sold whole or by the slice and include classic flavors such as Texas pecan fudge, key lime, sweet potato, banana cream, and strawberry rhubarb. A variety of other dessert favorites are also sold, including lemon and coconut meringue pies, specialty cheesecakes, gourmet cakes, and homemade cookies.
