Tennessee has a long and rich history of alcoholic beverage production, and the state's wine industry is no exception, dating back to the 19th century prior to the implementation of Prohibition. Today, the state is known for cultivating unique grape varietals that can withstand the humid climates and high altitudes of the region's terrain. Wineries are showcased throughout the Mississippi Delta American Viticultural Area, which extends throughout the state's southwestern region into Louisiana and Mississippi. Many wineries are also located throughout the central and eastern portion of the state, perfect for day trips or as part of excursions to area tourist spots such as Nashville and Gatlinburg.
