History of Airport Code PDX

The history of airport code PDX, Portland International Airport, goes back many years. The Portland area was originally served by another airport named Swan Island Municipal Airport, which has now closed but opened up in 1927 and was located on the Willamette River. Swan Island was quickly overwhelmed and it took less than ten years for authorities to realize that this island simply could not cope with the huge amounts of traffic in and out of Portland, OR.

PDX airport therefore needed to be built and plans were put in place for the construction of this new, much larger airport for the city. The site was bought by city authorities in 1936. It was 700 acres in size and bordered the Columbia River. The local council and Port of Portland authorities put funds together to allow the airport to be built, with the Portland area desperately in need of new jobs at the time.

The airport was constructed in the late 1930s and had been fully built by 1940. It was known as Portland-Columbia Airport at the time as Swan Island was still in operation. As with many airports all around the United States, PDX fell under the control of the military during World War II but was returned for civilian use in 1946. In the 1950s, a new terminal building was built and the subsequent years saw a lot of expansion and development at PDX to allow the airport to cope with even greater amounts of traffic.
