- Transformed in 1845 into an Italianate villa by Josiah Wheeler, and later extensively renovated by James Roosevelt from 1866 to 1900.
FDR’s Connection to Springwood
- Born in the master bedroom of Springwood in 1882, FDR called the estate home for his entire life.
- He and Eleanor Roosevelt moved back in 1905 to live with his mother, Sara.
- FDR oversaw major additions in 1915 to expand the home for his growing family and political gatherings.
- His final visit to Springwood was in March 1945; he died shortly after and was buried in the Rose Garden beside Eleanor and their dogs.
