Garretson Forge and Farm has belonged to the Garretson family since 1719 and is home to one of the oldest historic buildings in the state. The Dutch-Colonial-style Peter Garretson House was built in 1720 and offers visitors a glimpse of New Jersey farm life in the pioneer days. In those early days the farm grew various types of crops, tended by several slaves. Over the centuries parts of the farm were sold and today the historic site covers just 2 acres. Visitors are invited to come and explore the numerous buildings and artifacts which form a living outdoor museum. The extensive gardens are still used to grown various heirloom vegetables, herbs and medicinal plants.

2. Cadmus House Museum

You can immerse yourself in the history of Fair Lawn and Bergen County by visiting the
Cadmus House Museum. Located in an old Dutch-style stone building on Pollitt Drive, which dates back to 1806, the museum is filled with interesting documents, photographs and artifacts relating directly to the Borough of Fair Lawn. Expect to encounter an eclectic collection of treasures including Native American arrowheads, military uniforms from World Wars I and II, old farming tools and ancient kitchen equipment. The upper floor of the old house contains a Victorian Room furnished with period pieces and a Fireman’s Room where you can admire equipment and photos of early Fair Lawn firemen.

Anyone who loves fish and seafood should make a point of visiting Oceanos Restaurant in Fair Lawn. The attractive up-scale restaurant is family owned and operated and it certainly shows. All their fish and seafood is hand-picked daily at the fish market – anything fresher is still swimming. When it comes to their steaks, the opposite is true – only the finest USDA Prime Beef cuts, perfectly dry-aged, get the nod from owner Peter and his son Nikos. Back at the restaurant these wonderful locally sourced ingredients are cooked to perfection and served with flair. All the bread is home-baked and the desserts are rumored to be totally irresistible.

4. Historic Dutch House Tavern

The historic Dutch House Tavern occupies a building which dates back to around 1756. It is thought that the structure was originally a simple single-story farmhouse, built with the characteristic red sandstone which is found throughout Bergen County. Although the original Dutch House has seen several renovations and additions over the years, the wonderful atmosphere still remains and contributes to the tavern’s popularity. In keeping with its “local pub” style, the tavern serves traditional pub food including appetizers, salads, sandwiches and burgers. There are several wines available by the glass or bottle and a selection of bottled and draft beers.
