Amherst is a small, romantic, historic town in Hillsborough County in New Hampshire, on the Souhegan River and a part of the greater Boston region. It is home to Ponemah Bog Wildlife Sanctuary, the Joe English Reservation, Hodgman State Forest and Baboosic Lake. In the town center is the Amherst Village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Amherst Village Historic District. The historic downtown is full of beautiful colonial homes, surrounding the heart of the village, the Common. The Common, now a park, was once the center of village life. Local and visiting golfers will have fun at the Amherst Country Club, a public 18-hole championship golf course open year round.
