Originally called the Illinois Electric Railway Museum, the Illinois Railway Museum is dedicated to detailing the vital role that railroads played in the growth of the Chicago area. Located in Union, Illinois, the museum is the largest railroad museum in the United States with a collection featuring over 450 pieces of prototype equipment, as well as several excellent exhibits and displays of railroad equipment, artifacts, prints, and photographs and dioramas. Visitors can enjoy train rides on electric, steam, and diesel-powered trains on the mainline as well as the streetcar loop and can explore some of the remarkable exhibits, including an 1853 train depot, a 130-foot turntable from the Union Pacific Railroad's Burnham Shops, and four streetcar stations.
