Miner Brewing Company opened in 2013 with the goal of creating craft beers to enjoy on a regular basis. The beer is made with local ingredients and the water on-site. There are dozens of traditional year-round brews along with seasonal unique flavors and the brewmaster, Sandi, is also a winemaker. You can check the brews on tap via the Miner Brewing Company website at any time. At the time of writing, they include a non-alcoholic 1919 Root Beer in addition to Miner brews like Mango Cream Ale, Pineapple Perry, Rose Hip Cider, Experimental Weiz 02, Irish Red Ale, Oktoberfest, West River Pale Ale, and Dr. Valentine. In the taproom, you can get a tasting flight with six 4-ounce glasses or opt for a 16-ounce pint, a 32-ounce growlette, or a 64-ounce growler.

Those who love the brews can join the Miner Brewing Beer Club to get discounts on drinks and merchandise and other benefits. The taproom in the Black Hills has views of Black Elk Peak and the Miner Brewing Company and Prairie Berry Winery Taproom just opened, offering a range of both beer and wine. The main taproom also has select items from the Prairie Berry Winery’s Kitchen, such as flat-grill sandwiches and thick-crust focaccia pizzas.

2. The Knuckle Brewing Company

The Knuckle Brewing Company is part of the Knuckle Saloon in downtown Sturgis. The location is the only Saloon that also serves as a museum commemorating Sturgis memorabilia and antiques. Some of the craft beers you will find from Knuckle Brewing Company include Knucklehead Red, Pipe Welder Porter, Va’Knockers Blonde, Runkle Road IPA, and White Knuckle Pale Ale, along with seasonal beers. Those who prefer something non-alcoholic can find root beer, soda, milk, juice, lemonade, iced tea, and coffee.

The Knuckle Saloon portion of the property has a varied food menu with famous beef tips as well as salads, pasta, brick-fired pizzas, sandwiches, wings, burgers, and appetizers like mozzarella sticks, soft pretzels, fried pickles, and beer bread with artichoke dip. There are also weekly specials in the saloon so be sure to check them out if you get something to eat with your brew. Check the schedule for upcoming events, such as live music, games, car shows, and more.

3. Watertown Brewing Company

Watertown Brewing Company serves hand-crafted beer plus gastropub-themed fare plus wine. The brewing company welcomes those of all ages. Taps from Watertown Brewing Company include 81 Blackout, Codington Cream Ale, Lemon Shandy, Jinxed IPA, Autumn Dunkel, Kampeska Kold Press, Fire Hydrant Red, and Brassy Lassie. Or try another tap beer, including Zombie Killer Cherry Hard Cider, Schmaltz Alt, Mad Butcher, Saddle Bronc Brown, Buffalo Sweet, Ace Pineapple, Nitro Vanilla Porter, or Roustabout. There are also numerous bottled beers, such as Todd the Axe Man, Abrasive Ale, Grapefruit Hefeweizen, Alaskan Baltic Porter, Cultivateur Provision, Omission Pale Ale, Woodchuck Amber, and Stella Cidre. Many of the ciders are gluten-free.

If you want a meal to go with your brews, you will find cheese curds, dilly spears, smoked chicken wings, nachos, house tots, sandwiches, fish tacos, and burgers. In addition to beer, you can drink 1919 Root Beer, milk, and canned soda. Or opt for one of the seven house wines.

Crow Peak Brewing Company has been in Spearfish since 2007, serving craft brews that those in South Dakota love. The beer menu includes 11th Hour IPA, WICCA – Chile Ale, Easy Livin’ – Summer Ale, Walk in the Park – Session Ale, Spearbeer Pale Ale, Canyon Cream Ale, Pile O’Dirt Porter, Biere Daugaard – Biere de Garde, Black Currant Gose, and Bridal Veil Brown. There is frequently food on hand to go with the various brews, including a suggested pairing for each dish.

The brewery is open on Mondays to Thursdays from noon to 10 pm, on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to midnight, and on Sundays from 11 am to 9 pm. Crow Peak Brewing Company regularly hosts live music so you should stop by or check their schedule. They also frequently participate in community events and festivals.

5. Dakota Shivers Brewing

Dakota Shivers Brewing has both indoor and outdoor seating spaces for customers to enjoy and the brewery opened in 2015 after years of homebrewing. The brewery serves a range of craft beers, such as the 5280 Pale Ale, Hop Calamity IPA, Dark Matter RyePA, Whistle Blowin’ Stout, Carbide Barrel Aged Rye, Detonation Old School, Hand Hewn Red, and Always Pink-TCA (a Thimbleberry Cream Ale). All of those were available during craft beer week in May and the selection in the taproom rotates.

Dakota Shivers Brewing is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 2 pm to 8 pm, giving you plenty of opportunities to visit. If you like one of the beers, take home a crowler as these are available at the brewery. Or participate in one of the events they host, such as the 0.5ks the brewery participates in.

6. Eponymous Brewing Company

Eponymous Brewing Company was formed in 2017 with production beginning in early 2018 in this nanobrewery with two barrels. They use local ingredients and combine traditional techniques with modern brew science for creative offerings. Current brews include Citranym (an American IPA), Funkzilla (an American pale ale), Decenom (a Saison), S’Morgle Chocolate Chili (a porter), STR8 4WRD (an oatmeal stout), Peach Plucker (a tart wheat ale), and Galaxian Haze (a Hazy NE Style IPA).

A hoppy American wheat, a Belgian Witbier, and an Apricot Dreamsicle Hazy IPA are all coming soon. Head to the brewery for a special event like beer and bingo, tours, or releases of new brews. They are open Mondays through Thursdays from 4 pm to 10 pm, Fridays from 3 pm to midnight, Saturdays from noon to midnight, and Sundays from noon to 10 pm. Enjoy one of the beers on tap or take home some cans to enjoy later.

Fernson Brewing Company opened in 2015 and aims to create beers that make customers feel at home. In addition to the taproom in the Brewery, Fernson Brewing Company also opened Fernson on 8th, which is just a taproom and gives locals another place to enjoy the various beers. If you visit the main Brewery, you can also go on a tour.

There are five core beers, including a Farmhouse Ale, Shy Giant IPA, Lion’s Paw Lager, Curio A Tart Ale, and Wagonplane Porter. Seasonal beers include Esme (a Saison), barrel-aged Esme, Kingsbarn (a Scotch Ale), Forty Winks (a WBA), Zoo Brew, Three Legged Race, and the Fernson Seed Series. In addition to buying beer at one of the two taprooms, you can also find the brews at various local stores and restaurants. Or just stop by the brewery to buy some cans or fill up a growler or crowler.

8. Granite City Food & Brewery

Granite City Food & Brewery is actually part of a chain with a convenient location in Sioux Falls that also serves a range of food items. When you visit this brewery, you can enjoy one of the six Granite City beers on tap, including Prairie Vixen, The Northern Lager, The Duke Pale Ale, Broad Axe Stout, The Bennie Bock, and Batch 1000 Double IPA.

This brewery opens on Mondays through Thursdays from 11 am to midnight, on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am to 1 am, and on Sundays from 9 am to 10 pm. Although the kitchen typically closes an hour before closing time, drinks are served until close. The menu is extensive, including options for those with gluten sensitivities, a brunch menu, and a happy hour menu. Some seasonal features include harvest salmon, a farmhand steak sandwich, and lemon berry pain perdu.

9. Hay Camp Brewing Company

Hay Camp Brewing Company makes small-batch hand-crafted ales that are only available at their location. They have 3,200 square feet of space for serving with ten taps and are located in a multi-use building where they are the central business. Brews on tap include Transcendence Imperial Stout, Hopdlebar Maltstache DPA, Centennial IPA, Extra Special Dakota, Dino-SOUR Pale Ale, Bitter Warrior, Band Wagon SMASH XPA, and Victory Stout. Past beers have included Better Brown, Victory Stout, and Best Bitter.

If you like music, you can time your visit to Hay Camp Brewing Company for one of their many live performances. There are also other regular events, including Sip-N-Stretch yoga and beer every first Tuesday. Firkin Friday is the first Friday every month with tapping at 4 pm and a brewery tour at 5 pm.
