The history of Key West International Airport (airport code EYW) goes back to the early 1900s. The first flight from the city occurred in 1913. In 1928, Pan Am started running flights out of Key West. The United States military started operating in the area during the Second World War, and when the war ended, the various aviation facilities were handed over to the local city authorities and turned into Key West Municipal Airport.
