The Holburne Museum’s collection was originally built around the art obtained and collected by Sir William Holburne, who died in 1874 and left his extensive personal gallery of sculptures, paintings, and fine art to the city of Bath. Holburne was a former naval officer who spent much of his life traveling and collecting art, particularly pieces made of silver or porcelain as well as landscape paintings and unique sculptures. Since his death, the museum has also added several thousand more items to its collection, and the result is a beautiful fine art museum, and the first public art gallery in the city of Bath.
