Named for the “father of the National Parks,” John Muir, Muir Woods National Monument has protected old growth redwoods since 1908. One of the last old growth forests in the world, it is the only one in the San Francisco Bay area. Activities within the forest include hiking along 6 miles of loop trails, or longer trails that extend into the adjacent Mount Tamalpais State Park. 15 minute ranger talks and guided one-hour tours are available as staffing allows. To protect the fragile ecosystem, there are limits on the number of daily guests and reservations are required.
