The 18th century Mission San Juan Bautista was founded in 1797 and named in honor of Saint John the Baptist. The Spanish mission was the 15th to be established it what is now California. The mission has operated continuously since its founding, and still offers regular services to this day. The church is surrounded by a complex that includes a barracks, nunnery, and historic colonial adobe home. The unique church has three aisles rather than the traditional one. The three bell wall, or campanario, contains two of the original bells, which were salvaged in 2009. The third was destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1909.
