Barbarian Brewing was opened to the public by James Long and BreAnne Hovley in 2015. The Garden City brewery produces handcrafted beers in a variety of old-world brewing styles, emphasizing sour and barrel-aged brews in light and dark styles. Beers are tapped at both the brewery’s Garden City location and a downtown Boise taproom, including favorites such as its Sour Patch Kids Gose, NeoWolf 005 Imperial IPA, and Armagnac Thor’s Might Barleywine. Many brews are first offered as exclusives for the brewery’s annual club members, with remaining amounts tapped at both taprooms. A variety of special events are offered at both locations, including fire pit events and rotating pop-up food trucks.

2. Boise Brewing

Boise Brewing was founded in 2012 by Collin Rudeen and opened to the public in 2014 in collaboration with former Sockeye Brewing brewer Lance Chavez. The unique co-op brewery allows community members to purchase stock in the brewery and receive dividends in the form of its beer output, one of only a few similar breweries across the country. Unique custom Community Supported Beers are brewed for members and owners every several months, with flagship brews such as the brewery’s Snowboarder Porter, Syringa Pale Ale, Hip Check IPA, and Broad Street Blonde also available regularly. A wide variety of public special events are offered at the brewery throughout the year, including poetry and music performances and an annual Hoptober Freshtival fresh-hop festival.

3. Broken Horn Brewing Company

Broken Horn Brewing Companywas opened by homebrewer Kalen Doge in 2013, initially operating out of its owner’s garage. Today, the brewery offers a public taproom in McCall, with brews also available on draft at a number of local bars and restaurants. It produces approximately 500 barrels annually, offering unique year-round and limited-edition brews such as its Initial Attack IPA, Pin Up Porter, Sasquatch Stout, and Hells Canyon Jalapeño Chile Beer. The brewery’s taproom is open to the public Thursdays through Mondays and sells to-go cans, drafts, and a variety of branded merchandise. Live music performances are also presented at the taproom periodically.

4. Clairvoyant Brewing Company

Clairvoyant Brewing Company is located within a former automobile repair shop in Boise, offering a tasting room with a modern industrial vibe. The brewery is Boise’s West End’s first microbrewery and strives to serve as a community gathering place, welcoming well-behaved children and pets. A variety of craft brew styles are available on tap, including the brewery’s Frog’s Fix Köffee Kölsch, Blood Orange IPA, Chamomile Wit, Telepathy American Pale Ale, and Coffee Brown Ale. Though the taproom does not serve its own food, a variety of rotating food truck pop-ups are available throughout the week. Public special events include a summer trivia league offered on Wednesday evenings.

Cloud 9 Brewery is a nanobrewery in the heart of Boise that was opened in 2014, focusing on crafting brews made with locally-sourced, organic, and sustainable ingredients. Each small batch beer is brewed in batches of four barrels at a time, exploring classic brewing styles made with unique twists. Many brews emphasize unique fruit and herb ingredients, rarer European styles, and regional American IPA variants. The brewery’s restaurant serves a variety of classic American pub fare, including cheeseburgers, macaroni and cheese, street tacos, and appetizers. The restaurant is open to the public daily for lunch and dinner, offering eight tables of outdoor seating accommodating well-behaved pets.

6. Crescent Brewery

Crescent Brewery has been nicknamed the “Cheers of Nampa” for its laid-back, welcoming community gathering place atmosphere. It takes its name from the eponymous historic brewing company that was one of Nampa’s founding businesses, which opened to the public in 1907 and continued its production through Prohibition under the name the Overland Beverage Company before closing its operations in 1950. Today, the new brewery offers a variety of unique American and European-style brews, including its Altmaier Hefeweizen, Cherry Chocolate Porter, Highland Hammer Scotch Wee Heavy Ale, Skull Splitter Imperial Black IPA, and Tilted Kilt British-style Pale Ale.

is housed within co-owner Darrell Dlouhy’s former painting studio in midtown Couer d’Alene. Today, the building has been converted into a brewery and restaurant owned by Dlouhy and co-owners Keith Bertram and Jake Capaul, offering indoor and seasonal outdoor seating. A variety of hop-forward and malt-heavy beers are offered year-round and seasonally, including the brewery’s Red Letter Amber Ale, Hoppypotamus Pale Ale, Josiah’s Revenge Imperial Stout, and Badger’s Bounty IPA. Experimental small-batch ales are also offered periodically, including imperial and barrel-aged varieties. The brewery’s full-service restaurant menu showcases a variety of house-made American fare, including macaroni and cheese, sandwiches, nachos, and bar appetizers.
