Established as a National Monument in 1961, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park was created to preserve the neglected remains of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

In the mid-1800s, the canal connected the communities along the Potomac River and was used to transport coal, wood, and various other agricultural products.

Today, the park offers an 184.5-mile towpath used for biking and hiking as well as a number of campsites that include fire pits, water pumps, picnic areas, and latrines. Seven visitor centers can be found in the park as well, and hours vary according to the season.
