The Tampa Bay area is actually a very significant location for commercial airlines. The first ever commercial flight on a heavier-than-air airplane took place in Tampa when Tony Jannus flew a Benoist Flying Boat from St Petersburg to Tampa in 1914. The city's aviation story continued in 1928 with the opening of Drew Field. This airport, which was constructed just six miles from Downtown Tampa and named after landowner John H. Drew, competed with Tampa's other airport, Peter O. Knight Airport, in the years that followed.

The United States Army Air Forces took control of Drew Field during World War II and actually installed various improvements around the area. This meant that when Drew Field came back under the control of Tampa's authorities, it was much better than Peter O. Knight Airport and became the dominant airport of the two for Tampa and the Tampa Bay Area.

In 1950, with the arrival of international flights to Canada at TPA, the airport was renamed Tampa International Airport. A second terminal building was opened in 1952 and had to be expanded later as the airport started becoming more and more popular. Another terminal was built in the late 1960s and additional developments occurred around TPA airport in the decades that followed, with modern day renovation and development plans still in action.
