Review & FAQ:
Constructed in the early 19th century, The Ohio and Erie Canalway carried freight traffic across the state of Ohio for over 40 years until the advent of the railroad. It later served as a water source for various industries and towns. Today, the canal is managed by the National Park Service and used by the public for various recreational purposes such as birding, hiking, bicycling, or horseback riding. Some parts of the canal, such as the Ohio and Erie Canal Historic District, are designated as special National Heritage Areas, helping to preserve the heritage of the canal and improving the quality of life of residents in the counties of Northeastern Ohio.
