Review:

While they created a new nation, the Confederates essentially duplicated the old Union’s institutions, such as the White House. They established a navy, an army, and a post office – all the necessary departments for a functioning government – and so reasoned that they should provide their new Chief Executive, Jefferson Davis, with a residence.

Thus, the Provisional Congress authorized the leasing of a so-called Executive Mansion on February 21, 1861. The house had been built between 1832 and 1835. The architect is unknown, but the builder was A. M. Bradley, an established contractor. Successive owners were all prominent citizens of Montgomery.
