Founded in 1879, the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the oldest and largest art museums in America. The museum features a permanent collection of nearly 300,000 pieces of art, which are complemented by over 30 special exhibitions each year. The museum is open seven days a week, excluding some holidays, and regular tours are offered.
Group tours and self-guided tours are also available. The museum's busy events calendar includes a wide variety of performances, lectures, and social events, most of which are open to the public. A gift shop is located on the premises, as are several dining establishments.
