The Big Sur is a wild, rugged part of the California coast, unspoiled by development, rough and dangerous. About half way between Monterey and San Luis Obispo is Jade Cove with Jade Beach. You can get to the cove and the beach by following a steep, often treacherous trail that leads down. This beach is a popular spot for jade-hunters.

About two miles along the coast is another place where you can find jade, but also have some fun - Sand Dollar Beach, a popular beach for picnicking, beachcombing, surfing and fishing. Sand Dollar is the largest beach in this area, but the waves are often rough and there is a strong rip current, so swimmers should be careful. The location is a popular place for hang gliding and paragliding.
