The historic Old Fresno Water Tower is one of the town’s most prominent landmarks. The tower was designed by Chicago architect George Washington Maher in 1891 and building was completed three years later. The tower had a remarkably complex structure including a 3-foot wide passage between its inner and outer walls. The tower served to provide Fresno County residents with water for 69 years until its pumping machinery could no longer cope with demand. Built in the American Romanesque style, the lovely old structure was remodeled in 2001. The water tank was removed and it is nowadays home to the Fresno County Visitor’s Center.
