Twenty miles northeast of Fresno lies the Millerton Lake State Recreation Area (SRA). The 40-mile stretch of land and lake came into being in 1944 when the Friant Dam was constructed. Since then, it has been a place for families to spend the day together during the summer and winter months. On warm, sunny days visitors can go swimming, fishing, boating, or indulge in a number of other water activities.
There are special boats that take visitors on tours of the lake during winter months, which is also a great time to view the nesting bald eagles. The park is great for hikers and nature enthusiasts as the trails provide an opportunity to view wildlife such as cottontails, badgers, mule deer, and bald and golden eagles. Visitors can also camp on site, on boat, or on land.
