Review & FAQ:

Sutter's Fort State Historic Park preserves the 19th-century trading colony of the same name, which was originally established in 1839 by John Sutter as New Helvetia. Throughout the mid-19th century, the trading colony gained national notoriety for its association with the California Gold Rush and the Donner Party. Following its abandonment in 1848, the fort laid vacant for more than a century before its restoration by the California Department of Parks and Recreation in the mid-20th century. Since 1961, the fort has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and open to the public as a state historic park. Today, park visitors can view its preserved two-story adobe main building, along with a number of historic neighborhood structures constructed as residences in the 1930s and converted for business use. Self-guided audio tours elaborate on the fort's history and uses, while a Fort Trade Store sells gifts for history buffs related to the California Gold Rush and the Overland Trail.
