Little Manila is an area in Stockton that has been predominantly inhabited by Filipino Americans since the 1930s. Initially Filipinos were attracted to agricultural jobs in the Central Valley and Stockton soon became their home. At that point, the racist laws that were in place kept these people from educating themselves, increasing their economic status, or even going into Main Street. As Filipinos set up businesses and organizations to meet their needs, the area south of Main Street soon became their very own community. As you explore the streets today, you’ll find remnants of the hotels, restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and other establishments that were focused on serving the Filipino community. The once vibrant district is being restored to its former splendor and is identified by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as ‘one of the nation’s most endangered historic places’.
