Nestled at the southern end of the Santa Ana Mountains, the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve is a tract of protected land that offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and ecosystems of the area. Spanning 9000 acres, the Reserve protects a variety of unique ecosystems such as riparian wetlands, bunchgrass prairie, coastal sage scrub, Engelmann oak woodlands, chaparral, and vernal pools, along with 49 endangered, threatened or rare animal and plant species, and more than 200 species of native birds. The Reserve features several nature walks and trails for mountain biking and horseback riding, and interpretive educational programs that delve into the rich history of the region.
