There’s a lot about the Empire Mine State Historic Park that makes it special. Not only is the site home to one of the oldest gold mines in California, the site is also known for being one of the largest, deepest, longest and most prolific mine in the entire state. The mine is over 100 years old and produced an incredible 5.8 million ounces of gold before it was finally shut down in 1956. Today, the park provides visitors with the interesting opportunity to visit many of the mine’s buildings, restored gardens, and even the preserved home of the mine owner. Easy hikes around the park are another enjoyable aspect of the Empire Mine State Historic Park with 8-miles of easy trails to venture off on.
