You can learn all about one of California’s original farming towns when you visit the Manteca Historical Society and Museum. In the early days California settlers were restricted to growing wheat, which was the only crop to survive the dry summers. However, by the early 1900’s the advent of irrigation and the railway meant that farmers could branch out, and the town of Manteca grew by leaps and bounds. The Manteca Historical Museum is filled with hundreds of photos and artifacts which tell the story. There are exhibits about the arrival of the railway, the first wine farm, early farming implements, a blacksmith’s shop, a dentist and so much more to admire.
