The Shasta Dam, also called the Kennett Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam located at the north end of the Sacramento Valley. Spanning the Sacramento River, the reservoir stands at 602 feet high, making it the eighth tallest dam in the country, and is the most significant reservoir in the state. Constructed for hydroelectricity, flood control, and long-term water storage, the dam was considered one of the greatest engineering feats of all time. Today, the dam and the power plant can be explored on guided tours led by friendly and knowledgeable staff who discuss the history, purpose, and construction of this enormous project.
