Playhouse in the Park, originally known as the Murray-Calloway County Community theatre, was established in January of 1977. One of the country’s oldest continuously producing theatres, the Playhouse in the Park theatre group looked to use the old Murray Freight Depot as its community theatre and first opened in the Murray, Kentucky community with its production of “Wizard of Oz” in June of 1980. After “wandering around town” for three years, the theatre group became the Playhouse in the Park thanks to its location at the Murray-Calloway County Park and now present numerous productions and offers a variety of programs.
