Established in 1928 by Professor James V. Herring, the Howard University Gallery of Art is an established art museum at Howard University, whose main gallery forms one-third of the college's Fine Arts complex. Housed in Childer’s Hall, the museum features notable collections of African artifacts, African American art, Renaissance and baroque paintings, and European prints. The Howard University Gallery of Art holds a vital acquisition of works primarily dominated by African and African American artists, including Henry Ossawa Tanner, Edmonia Lewis, and Archibald Motley.
