Hotel Spotlight: Afognak Wilderness Lodge
Located on the edge of a nearly untouched forest in Kodiak, Alaska and situated on a protected, private cove, the Afognak Wilderness Lodge was designed for rustic comfort in the middle of mother nature. Each cabin was lovingly hand built by members of the founding Randall family using local, hand-hewn logs. The Lodge is the only residence located inside the Afognak Island State Park. Cabins are available to book from May through September.
All of the rooms at Afognak Wilderness Lodge are located in one of their three log cabins. The lodge as a whole can accommodate up to 12 people at a time.
Each log cabin was designed to be cozy and warm with rustic furnishings, keeping guests comfortable even when the weather in Alaska gets frigid. Each cabin is either one or two bedrooms and features a large living room.
Every cabin has electricity 24 hours a day (which is unusual in this part of Alaska) and has indoor, modern bathrooms with quick, on demand hot water. The bedrooms have wall to wall carpet, with either a queen or a twin bed covered with a warm down comforter. Each cabin will also have a view of either the forest or the saltwater cove from its large, picturesque windows.
However, none of the cabins have internet access. If hotel guests need to access the internet, wireless internet access (as well as a satellite phone) is available in the Main Lodge.
The Main Lodge offers a selection of hearty dining options that is served up family style to hungry lodge guests. Guests who plan on heading out to spend a day outside can also request a packed lunch to take with them. The Lodge does have an alcohol license, so some alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase or guests can choose to bring their own while staying. Food is all served with an eye toward fresh, local produce and cuisine. The meal options rotate according to seasonal availability and the chef’s choice.
Lodge guests can rent one of the available cabin boats to head out and spend the day on either the freshwater or saltwater cove. All boats include a comfortable cabin and were designed to either cruise slowly or move quickly on the water. These boats are the perfect way to enjoy a casual but adventurous time out in the wilderness. Lodge guests can also hire a tour guide to take them out on the water if they are not licensed to drive a boat or if they do not feel comfortable heading out on their own. Boat rentals are the perfect way to see the whales, as well.
Fishing is another of the top outdoor activities that hotel guests participate in while staying at the Lodge. Fishing gear and lures are included in the price of the rental (for spinning, fly, and deep-sea fishing). Fish cleaning and freezing can also be done at the Lodge. If the weather isn’t cooperative, rain gear and hip boots are also available at no additional charge. Licenses are required to fish in the both the freshwater and the saltwater cove, but this information will be gathered when securing a reservation and the licenses will be ready for hotel guests when they arrive for their stay. Fishing spots are available alongside the stream banks as well as at the estuaries. Daily limits are enforced and catch, and release is encouraged. There are three varied species of salmon (silvers, reds, and pinks) as well as a selection of trout (dolly varden, rainbow, and steelhead).
Other outdoor activities include kayaking, beachcombing, an outdoor sauna, and wildlife photography. For a fun combination of those activities, the Lodge offers a Kayaking Photography tour. The area surrounding the Lodge has often been calling a photographer’s dream, and many hotel guests stay on the premises simply for the abundance of opportunities to photograph nature and wildlife that it presents. Some of the most frequently photographed animals at the Lodge are the Kodiak Brown Bear, bald eagles, puffins, whales, and otters.
Birding is also a common outdoor activity at the Lodge. There are a wide and diverse variety of both onshore and offshore birds to see on Afognak Island. Guests have reported hawks, crows, ravens, magpies, water ouzels, kingfishers, cormorants, loons, auklets, sea gulls, and many more. They also make for excellent photography opportunities.
Also on-site are both an archery and a skeet shooting range. These activities are included with the cost of a cabin rental.
