Located in the charming tree-lined neighborhood of downtown Chicago’s Gold Coast, Newberry Library offers an exquisite and elegant venue for romantic weddings and other special celebrations. Established in 1887 as an independent research library specializing in the humanities, the Newberry Library is a public library situated just a fewblocks from the dynamic pulse of downtown Chicago. Exuding breathtaking architecture and the timeless elegance and grace of a bygone era, the Newberry boasts several spaces that can be hired for intimate ceremonies, rehearsal dinners or grand receptions for up to 208 people. Outdoor services can also be held in the nearby Washington Park Square, followed by a reception in the Library’s central event space, Ruggles Hall.
The Newberry Library features three beautifully appointed event spaces, namely the Newberry Lobby, Ruggles Hall, and the Towner’s Fellows Lounge.
The Newberry Lobby has been lovingly restored to its original 1893 grandeur and features a 20-foot ceiling with an Art Nouveau chandelier and light fixtures, exquisite Romanesque details, a broad marble staircase with an ornate railing, and a Steinway grand piano. The charming space can accommodate up to 208 guests for private functions such as small dinner parties and cocktail receptions.
Ruggles Hall features high 24-foot ceilings, custom-built rich mahogany wood panels, recessed turn-of-the-century replica chandeliers and sconces, and large windows that flood the interior with natural light and boast breathtaking views of Washington Square Park and Dearborn Parkway. The hall also houses a Steinway grand piano and can comfortably accommodate up to 200 people for formal dinners and 250 people for cocktail receptions.
The historic Towner Fellows’ Lounge is located on the second floor of the building and is richly carpeted with oak panels, tall built-in bookshelves, original furnishings, an ornate grandfather organ clock, and a Steinway grand piano. Towner Fellows’ Lounge is a lovely space for cocktail parties of up to 75 people and elegant sit-down luncheons or dinners for up to 50 people.
Rental of the venue includes amenities and services such as six hours of rental time, set-up and clean-up of the site, the use of audiovisual equipment such as a built-in sound system and microphones, an hour rehearsal on the day before, and a member of staff to facilitate the ceremony rehearsal. The venue fee also includes the use of the Towner Fellows’ Lounge and a bridal suite for getting ready and relaxing in between the ceremony and reception, tables, chairs, chair covers, and a Steinway grand piano, perimeter décor such as votive candles and lights, parking for up to 35 cars behind the library along with a discounted parking at a nearby garage. Security will also be supplied for the duration of the event, as well as an events planner and venue liaison to ensure a smooth, hassle-free event.
Newberry Library is located at 60 West Walton Street and offers complimentary parking for up to 35 cars behind the building, as well as discounted parking for overflow cars at a nearby garage. The venue is wheelchair accessible and offers high-speed wireless Internet.
