The Park-McCullough Historic House is among the best preserved and finest Victorian mansions in New England. Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the mansion is located in North Bennington, off Vermont Route 67A. Set on 200 acres of ground and boasting more than 35 rooms, the house is a perfect example of a Second Empire American country house and incorporates many Romantic Revival architectural features.
Currently, the historic house is owned by a non-profit organization that hosts events, occasions, and parties every few months. However, the history of the house can be traced way back to the 1860s. The house largely retains the impact and integrity of its original design and was built in 1864 and 1865 by the entrepreneur and attorney Trenor W. Park. Henry Dudley, a famous architect from New York, designed the house.
For its time, the Park-McCullough House was quite revolutionary. It was one of the few houses to have gas lighting, access to hot and cold running water, and indoor plumbing. Around the 1900s, some of the fixtures were converted to electricity. Most rooms have fireplaces, while the original house included a steam boiler, located somewhere in the basement, which heated the first and second floors.
Other attractions of the place include a music room and a billiard room that contained many high-tech gadgets, including an 1875 billiard table that was purchased for around $803 at the time. In the 1930s, the owners also managed to install an elevator that ran between the first and second floors.
The house still retains many of these features and, now owned by a non-profit organization, the Park-McCullough House offers space, tours, and public programming for private events and brings visitors and tourists from all around the world closer to the remarkable history of the Park family and the changes it underwent.
There is even the opportunity to tie the knot here and share a special day with family and friends at this remarkable home. Couples who wish to enjoy a traditional wedding ceremony and reception with a little fascinating history thrown in are welcome to hold their event at this serene venue. With its highly romantic ambiance and environment, it is a dream wedding venue, surrounded by diverse flowers, trees, and vegetation. Once booked, the entire grounds and house are reserved for the couple and their guests. This ensures the wedding ceremony remains a truly private and romantic affair.
In addition, visitors and guests can tour the mansion and visit each of the 35 rooms as well as view all the valuable and historic pieces. There is even a “cocktail hour.” This gives guests the opportunity to play games on the expansive lawns of the house and listen to some fine country music or enjoy a dance out in the open. You can sign up to become a member of the Park-McCullough House. Walk-in tours are held on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, although you can contact the management if you want to arrange a tour at any other time.
