The West African coastal country of Senegal is nestled between Mauritania and Guinea on the Atlantic coast. Senegal, in the Wolof language, translates to “hospitality,” which is what visitors will find plenty of here. Travelers who come to enjoy Senegal’s sunshine should head to the southern coastal region of Casamance, where they’ll find beautiful palm-fringed beaches and great surfing. The southeastern Fouta Djallon region offers a different kind of beauty in a mountainous area dotted with cascading waterfalls. No matter where visitors travel in this small country, wildlife takes center stage, including migratory birds, hippos, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and panthers. The culture of Senegal is equally diverse from the rich culinary experiences, with French, Portuguese, and Maghrebis influences to the tragic history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
