What do the world’s oldest shoe, brain and winery have in common? Interestingly, they were all held in a series of Armenian Caves known as the Areni Cave Complex. The caves are nothing less than a treasure trove of artifacts – particularly artifacts from the Copper Age. Guided tours are available to interested travelers, all of which are full of factoids and interesting knowledge that will definitely pique the interest of history lovers. Some awesome finds to see up close at the caves include a several burial sites dating back to 5000 or 4000 BCE, the oldest sample of Neolothic brain in the world, and the world’s oldest wine press.

2.Armenian Genocide Museum and Institute

Established in 1995, the Armenian Genocide Museum and Institute is dedicated to the academic and scientific study as well as the exhibition of textual and visual documentation to the 20th century’s first genocide. The museum features artifacts that depict the Western Armenian way of live before and during the genocide in the Ottoman Empire, and also works hard to preserve and honor the victims of this time. Housed in a spectacular two-story building, the museum has seen hundreds and thousands of visitors since it opened including French Presidents like Jacques Chirac and Francois Hollande, Pope John Paul II, Pope Francis, and Vladimir Putin.

Browse the observatory’s collection of astrophysical artifacts, learn fun and interesting facts about space and the stars, or even try using the powerful telescope to observe the moon, stars and planets. Of course, the grounds are amazing to behold alone as the beautiful Mount Aragats serves as the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory’s stunning backdrop.

The Erebuni Museum is an eye-catching tourist destination that was established in 1968. As a historical and archaeological museum, the Erebuni was once a Urartian Fortress dating back to 782 BCE. After the city-fortress was excavated, the fortress was restored and converted into the museum that locals and visitors alike know and love today. Many of the items excavated from the site are now housed in the museum including giant karasses, which were used to store wine, ceramic artifacts, agate beads, bronze bracelets and more. All of the items weave into one beautiful story of what life was like in the citadel thousands of years ago.

Spend a romantic afternoon strolling through a lovely public garden when you visit the Kentron District’s Lovers’ Park. This 2.5-hectare large park was originally called the Kozern Park and dates back to the 18th century. Some of the park’s popular and must visit features are its chapel and medieval cemetary. Additionally, the park is home to a small but lovely amphitheater that can seat 215 people. Mind boggling and absolutely amazing, the Old Khndzoresk Cave Village is an incredible network of natural and man-made caves that, up until the 20th century, was home to Eastern Armenia’s largest village. Nestled on the slope of a hill, the historic cave village is estimated to have been home to up to 15,000 people and even had three schools and a couple of churches. Today, visitors are welcome to explore the network of caves at the village and can even traverse the gorge if they’re brave enough. This is exactly the case for Sergei Parajanov, an Armenian filmmaker, who rose to international prominence after he produced the film entitled Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. 18.Sevanavank Monastery

Situated at the northwestern shore of the popular Lake Sevan, the Sevanavank Monastery was founded in 874 AD by the daughter of Ashot I, Princess Mariam. The monastery was founded at the time when Armenia was still battling to emancipate itself from Arab rule and was built for monks from Echmiadzin. There are two churches located on the monastery grounds, the Holy Apostoles and the Mother of God, both of which are cross shaped and have octagonal tambours. Other items of interest to see at the Sevanavank Monastery are the ruins of a gavit, and the stunning natural vistas of Lake Sevan.

Dating back to the 4th Century, the Geghard is a medieval Amernian monastery that was once the spiritual center of the Kotayk province. In spite of its long standing history, the monastery actually started as a small cave chapel as the main cathedral of the Geghard wasn’t actually built until 1215. A curious and peculiar prehistoric site just outside the distant village of Sisian, Zorats Karer is a ring of menhirs mysteriously pierced with holes that is more commonly known as the “Armenian Stonehenge.” The stones have been dating back to the Iron Age or the Middle Bronze Age and are theorized to be an ancient astronomical observatory of some sort. All 223 stones are found in a circle and are bordered by two arms to the circle’s north and south. Try looking through the holes in the stones and enjoy the picturesque vistas that surround the Zorats Karer. One thing is for sure, you won’t run out of fabulous photo opportunities.
