More Ideas: Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is internationally known as one of the highest mountain summits in the world. Guests from all across the globe travel to the area to try their luck at scaling to the top, but other opportunities are available for those who don’t want as intense of an experience as well.
Mount Kilimanjaro is actually formed from three separate volcanic cones - Shira, Mawenzi, and Kibo. It is considered the tallest mountain in the country of Africa and has been the subject of a huge amount of scientific studies due to the shrinking ice fields and glaciers. It was first ascended in full in 1889. The mountain has been the subject of much pop culture, like a book written by Ernest Hemingway (Under Kilimanjaro) and a mention in a popular song by the band Toto (Africa).
The highlight of visiting Mount Kilimanjaro are the myriad of different treks and hiking trails located around and up the side of the mountain. There are seven different official routes that allow adventurous guests to scale the mountain - Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Shira, Mweka, and Umbwe. Each hiking trail is unique in its own way. The most popular route to take is Machame, although it can be fairly steep for more inexperienced hikers.
The hiking treks are not quick, and visitors should expect to take at least a few days and up to a full week to complete them. For instance, Machame is regularly completed in six to seven days, while the Lemosho trek takes generally anywhere from six to eight days in its entirety.
The “easiest "of the treks is Rongai but is also considered one of the least scenic routes. Another easier trek is the Marangu trail, however, be aware that this is also one of the most popular and tends to be frequently crowded with other hikers.
The majority of the hiking treks have camping areas and huts that will be shared with other hikers along the way. Guests should be aware before taking any of the treks and plan and pack accordingly.
It is incredibly important for anyone planning to hike or scale Mount Kilimanjaro to do appropriate research. Even experienced hikers can have issues with the altitude, leading to not only altitude sickness but also possible death. There are also extreme temperatures and high winds.
There are also a variety of animals that call the mountain home. Large animals are infrequently found there, but there have been rare sightings of both cape buffalos and elephants that are potentially dangerous to hikers. There are also species specific to Mount Kilimanjaro, like the Kilimanjaro shrew and the Kinyongia tavetana chameleon.
Make sure to stop and check out the Kilimanjaro memorial, honoring the first hiker from Europe to fully scale the mountain, a man named Hans Meyer from Germany.
For guests who want to experience the mountain without taking the risks of hiking can visit the national park that surrounds it. Guests can take much easier hikes and walks in this area as they have less altitude and less rocky terrain. There are also a wide variety of different native animals to keep an eye out for, including the tree hyrax, grey duiker, elephants, blue monkeys, and leopards.
Mount Kilimanjaro, due to its fame and notoriety, is frequently home to many different special events and climbs. Most of them tend to be charitable in nature, like the Climb for Clean Water that is hosted annually with the funds raised going to help provide safe water as well as good sanitation for the African people. It is hosted in July and the climb takes part on the full seven-day Machame trek course. Optional two-day safaris can be added after the event as well.
There is also a Kilimanjaro marathon that is held annually in April that draws many visitors to the area. Those not wanting to run a full marathon can choose to run a half marathon instead, as well. There is even a 5K run/walk that even kids can take part in. Medals are given to all finishers of both the full as well as the half marathon. Bottled water is provided.
Dining and Shopping
The area surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro is home to a wide variety of different dining experiences and cuisine options. The top rated is Pizzeria Leone L’Africano, an Italian restaurant and pizza pub. There are also coffee shops, Chinese restaurants, and Indian. There are also many different shopping opportunities surrounding the mountain, from small, specialty shops like Mama Africa Curio to larger shopping malls like Kibo Tower.
