Elvis Presley was one of the most prominent figures in rock and roll history, making him one of the wealthiest entertainers of the time. He was a long-time resident of Memphis and was quite proud of his Graceland mansion estate.
Sadly, in August 1977, Presley died at Graceland and left his estate to his family. However, he was not one for financial planning, meaning when he passed, his family was essentially broke.
Graceland was officially opened to the public for tours on June 7, 1982, after the Presley Foundation and Trust decided it was the best move to obtain some income for the family.
In 2006, Graceland was officially appointed a National Historic Landmark. Currently, Graceland welcomes more than 500,000 visitors of all ages each year and is one of the most visited homes in the United States.
