Originally named Cannonsburgh and for a short time the capital of Tennessee, Murfreesboro is considered one of the most livable towns in Tennessee for its high quality of life. From a mostly agricultural community growing corn, tobacco, and cotton, Murfreesboro grew into a modern city with three colleges and several academies. The city and its surrounds are drenched in history, which can be relived in the picturesque Cannonsburgh Village, the Hazen Brigade Monument, or Stones River National Battlefield. Things to Do in Murfreesboro, TN: Oaklands Historic House and Museum

Oaklands is a beautiful historic Italianate plantation home located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and a local landmark that tells the story of the times of prosperity in the Old South and the hardships local people had to endure during the Civil War. It started as a small two-room brick house built in the late 1800s for Dr. James Maney and his wife, Sally Murfree Maney, who inherited the land north of Murfreesboro next to a large spring. The house was added to and improved with the next generation of residents, to end as the elegant mansion lavishly decorated that can be seen today. The plantation was abandoned after the last resident Rebecca Jetton left and was purchased by the city to be torn down until a group of local women rallied to restore it and turn it into a house museum. The house was opened to the public in 1960 and is now registered on the National Register of Historic Places. Old Stone Fort State Park

The Old Stone Fort is a 1,500 to 2,000-year-old Native American structure built in what is now Coffee County and used for about 500 years before it was abandoned. It is the most complex enclosure on a hilltop discovered in the South. While the structure resembles a fort, it is not sure what its purpose was. It is suspected that it was used for ceremonies rather than for defense. It is now part of Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park and there is a beautiful hiking trail that follows the wall of the fort as it winds through the dramatic scenery. You can see the original entrance to the fort, designed to face the sun rising over the horizon during the summer solstice. There are several informative panels that describe the fort as well as several scenic waterfalls along the trail.
