The history of St Louis airport code STL (St Louis Lambert International Airport) goes back many years. The airport actually had its start way back in the late 1800s, when the land that would eventually be used for STL airport was turned into a balloon launching site called Kinlock Field. The iconic Wright Brothers actually visited the site, along with Theodore Roosevelt, who became the first president of the United States to enjoy a journey on a plane at St Louis in 1910. Ten years after that flight, more land in the area was leased and converted into the Lambert–St. Louis Flying Field.

The 'Lambert' part of the name, which has remained into the modern era, was chosen in honor of Olympic golfer Albert Bond Lambert, who was actually the first pilot in St Louis. It was Lambert who, in 1925, purchased the airfield and started to help expand it with construction of hangars and a large passenger terminal building. The military also took interest in STL and made a Naval Air Station in the area, with the airport itself being renamed Lambert–St. Louis Municipal Airport in 1930 and getting its first terminal in 1933.

As with many major airports, STL was used by the military during the war. It was used for the production of aircraft parts and other items. After the war, control of the airport was returned to the city and more expansions began, with a large new terminal being built in the 1950s. The airport got another new name of Lambert–St. Louis International Airport in 1971.

In the following years, authorities thought about constructing a new airport to replace STL. The result was MidAmerica St Louis Airport, which opened in 1997 in Mascoutah, IL but barely runs any passenger service these days as it just wasn't seen as convenient enough to outmatch STL. In recent years, traffic numbers at STL have risen and the airport got its current name of St. Louis Lambert International Airport in 2016.
